It has been one of the great privileges of my life to receive so many women of reverence: women in devotion to themselves, and to life. Then, unbidden, the most beautiful thing happens: they find one another. What began one by one became family, chosen and found. They hold each other to their highest still, in their families, their ventures and their art, and years on, when we meet, it is as though no time has passed. Over the years, women of The Atelier have crossed the world to stay with me here, in my home, long after our time together. It is pure magic. This is what I wish for every woman who comes to The Atelier: not only a beautiful life, but her kindred.— H.M.

What comes first

The Remembering

Before a single room is touched, a woman is reminded who she is: that she is, and always has been, pure magic.

She is a woman who yearns for more — who sees more, questions more, wants more. She gives, and over-gives, and knows it. She has hope, and she keeps it close, tended like a candle in the window.

She is a woman of the finer things. She would always choose quality over quantity, and elevation over mediocrity. Fads and trends pass her by; she is drawn instead to the timeless, and to a sophistication that has no need to announce itself. She has often felt she belongs to an era long ago. Her heart quickens at stationery that matches her interiors and the very gathering she is planning. She cares deeply about the effect she has on life, and much of the modern world quietly offends her: the haste, the noise, the throwaway.

Beneath it all runs a thread of knowing that has haunted her for years. She knows what the world advises, she has seen how others go about it, and none of it has ever fit.

Surely, she thinks, a life can be lived beautifully.

Surely a woman can build the existence her heart desires in a beautiful way: one that fulfils her, honours her values and her virtues, and lets her create and receive all that is most good for her, in a way that is good for the world as well.

They are the very texture of a life lived on purpose, and they come again and again, for life is always twinkling just for her, and now she is present enough to see it.
